I'm new to all this MVC frameworks but have a really DIFFICULT time understanding the documentation of CakePHP book 2.0. They are going FAR TO ADVANCED before making me grasp the basics.
Am I retarded? Why when I read codeigniter I understood it right away? Because they did a great job documenting their framework! Even the Apress CakePHP book is now outdated with version 1.3, so I can't use it, because I'm starting a fresh new project and would need to base it on cake 2.0. Anyway, I came here because I need your advice. How can I start with CakePHP other than the onlin documentation that sux? |

I think that's the problem of IT people, as we write good programs, but we can't write good documentation.
Try with blog tutorial, it's "how to get started with CakePHP". -------------------- Quibi - online invoicing app made with CakePHP, Program za fakturiranje | Online dating made with CakePHP => Zasebni stiki

You're not retarded, the learning curve is bit hard. did you checked the bakery (http://bakery.cakephp.org/)? There's nice examples of code there. -------------------- You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat.(Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955), when asked to describe radio)

Hi iamarto,
When I started out with CakePHP I found the documentation quite difficult. It was sparse to say the least. Now, however, I think its awesome. They have done a real good job keeping on top of a set of complete and accurate documentation. That being said, the Book is really only good for reference and for a out and out beginner, problem not that useful - except for the tutorials section. There is a excellent tutorial on creating a simple blog with CakePHP... its here: http://book.cakephp.org/2.0/en/tutorials-a.../blog/blog.html I recommend every new started to CakePHP to atleast look it over, if not follow it step by step. The bakery on the otherhand, still today I'm not a big fan of - seems quite out of date. It is useful for finding some components to save you some time a little though on though. Good luck -------------------- |

Thanks for all replies, after going with codeigniter with their awesome documentation, I found some limitations in automagic there of course... so I came back to CakePHP and now Cake seems easier than it was before. CI makes a great job to get you started in grasping the concepts.
Still a noob though, Arto |
